History
Founded in 1995 while President Rick Wagoner was in college at the Belk College of Business at UNC-Charlotte, CompuDoctor was originally called CompuTutor. Seizing on the opportunity provided by the release of Windows95 and the growing use of computers both in the home and in small businesses, CompuTutor focused on building its own proprietary line of SCSI brand computers and on teaching folks how to get the most out of them.
Rick hired Ed McGee in 1996 to help him out on the tech side. Ed was an ECPI graduate and veteran of the IBM training program for PC and server repair. Ed was the cornerstone of what was to become CompuDoctor. As time went on and people generally got the hang of using PCs the training business faded and became a secondary offering, while networking and repairing computers became more important to the client. By the end of the Y2K scare the name changed to CompuDoctor and the CompuTutor name became part of our history.
By 2001 CompuDoctor’s business and personnel changed significantly. Impacted by the post Y2K and post 9/11 economy and no longer able to be competitive with the manufacturing giants like HP, Gateway, and DELL, CompuDoctor decided to become a broker of DELL equipment rather than fight the trend. This partnership has proved to be a potent combination of expertise. DELL provides solid equipment to build our solutions on, and great warranty and tech support when something goes astray. CompuDoctor adds expertly tailored solutions and professional service to the equation and the result is a truly winning combination for the client.
In 2003 we started expanding again. This allowed us to spin off our residential and home-based business clients to a new firm, Barefoot Technologies, founded and run by Brian Barefoot, a former employee. Ed McGee went on to work in his father’s business in Asheboro, and Tony Waterman joined the firm in the role of Service Manager. Now able to concentrate solely on small to midsized business solutions CompuDoctor developed a new business plan based on IT Management Outsourcing. Our current business model is a reflection of that movement, which we helped to popularize.
In 2007 we made another big gain in the breadth of our service offerings. Driven by client demand we invested in a state of the art remote management system and began to concentrate on managed service offerings. We re-tooled our staff to fit the needs of our clients and are very pleased to introduce our current staff as our best team ever!
